7 Tips for Winterizing Your MetroWest Home’s Plumbing
7 Tips for Winterizing Your MetroWest Home’s Plumbing

Date

It’s hard to believe that winter is just around the corner here in MetroWest. Now is the perfect time to prep your plumbing for the upcoming season.

Here are seven tips to winter-proof your plumbing system, so you can avoid any unpleasant surprises during the colder months.

1. Insulate Exposed Pipes

Exposed pipes in unheated areas like basements, garages, attics, and crawl spaces are especially vulnerable to freezing. Insulating these pipes with foam covers, insulation sleeves, or heat tape helps maintain a steady water temperature and prevents them from freezing and bursting.

We also suggest measuring your pipes and securing the insulation tightly around them. Adding heat tape to pipes located in extra-cold areas can provide even more protection. Regular checks throughout the season will ensure that insulation remains intact and effective.

2. Seal Cracks and Openings

Cold air sneaking through small cracks and gaps around pipes can put your plumbing system at risk. Even tiny openings can allow freezing air to reach pipes, causing them to freeze and burst.

Take time to inspect areas where pipes enter walls, foundations, or floors, and seal any gaps with caulk or expanding foam. Pay close attention to exterior walls, basements, and crawl spaces, where unprotected pipes are most vulnerable. Blocking these drafts will help keep your plumbing secure and prevent cold air from compromising your system.

3. Keep Interior Faucets Dripping

Running water through your pipes, even at a slow drip, reduces the risk of freezing by keeping water flowing. This is especially useful for pipes that run through colder areas of your home or during nights when temperatures dip.

Choose a faucet farthest from your water main, so the entire plumbing system benefits from the water movement. A steady drip not only prevents freezing but also relieves pressure that could build up and cause pipes to burst.

4. Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Faucets and Hoses

Outdoor faucets and garden hoses are especially prone to freezing during the winter months. If water is left inside them, it can freeze, expand, and crack the pipes. To prevent this, disconnect all hoses and drain outdoor faucets before temperatures drop.

For added protection, turn off the water supply to outdoor faucets from the interior shut-off valve and open the faucets to drain any remaining water. If your home doesn’t already have frost-free spigots, consider installing them to avoid future issues.

5. Shut Off Water Lines Before Leaving for Vacation

If you’re planning holiday travel or a winter break getaway, shutting off your water lines can safeguard your home from plumbing disasters while you’re away. A burst pipe while no one is home can result in extensive water damage, but turning off the water flow at the main valve prevents such incidents.

To do this, locate your main valve, usually found near the water meter or where the main water line enters your home, and turn it off before you leave. Draining any remaining water from the pipes by opening a faucet provides added protection. Knowing your home is safe from potential plumbing issues allows you to travel with peace of mind.

6. Maintain a Consistent Indoor Temperature

Maintaining a steady indoor temperature is essential to preventing frozen pipes. Sudden temperature drops inside the home increase the risk of freezing. So, avoid letting your house get too cold. We recommend setting your thermostat to at least 55°F, even if you’re away for a few days.

For pipes located along exterior walls, open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around them. This will give them extra protection during cold spells.

7. Know How to Shut Off Your Water Supply

In the event of a plumbing emergency, such as a burst pipe, knowing how to shut off your water supply quickly can minimize damage. Familiarize yourself with the location of your main shut-off valve and make sure it’s easy to access.

Test the valve periodically to make sure it works properly and keep a wrench nearby in case it requires extra force to operate. Labeling the valve can also save valuable time in an emergency, allowing you or other household members to respond quickly.
